The Coronation of the Virgin Mary

Franciscan Monastery, Zadar, Croatia

From the late 13th century onward it is almost always Christ who places the crown on Mary's head, but different artists found different ways to add the Father and/or the Holy Spirit. In this case, the Father expresses his blessing of the coronation by clasping the shoulders of both Christ and Mary. As usual, angels attend.

The statue is part of a collection of four in the monastery. All four are in the same medium and style. The statue of Simeon in that group has a naked Christ Child, a feature of 15th- and 16th-century Presentation in the Temple images, so the Coronation of Mary is probably from that same period.
